EUGENOL ALLERGY


Key Allergens

Eugenol is a major component of essential oils which is found in plants. Eugenol is found in higher concentrations in fresh herbs and spices and are natural irritants which can cause allergic contact dermatitis. Eugenol is anti-microbial, anti-viral and anti-fungal.

Skin irritation to eugenol is more common in occupations where you are frequently coming into contact with these oils, like masseurs, chefs, cooks, growers and pickers.


Associated Syndromes

Eugenol is associated with allergic contact dermatitis. Symptoms of this include eczema, dermatitis under jewellery or plasters, blistering or ulceration of the skin and itching and/or red skin.

Cross Reactivity

Lots of foods contain eugenol, but it most abundant in fresh herbs and spices.
