LOQUAT ALLERGY

Key Allergens

Loquats are fruits in the Rosaceae family of plants. Other fruit in this family include apples, cherry, peach, pear, plums and strawberries.

Loquat has been shown to contain Bet v Proteins. Which can cause oral allergy symptoms and are linked to Pollen Food Allergy Syndrome.

Food Intolerances

Food is medium in salicylates Food is high in FODMAP

Loquats are a high FODMAP food. FODMAP stands for Fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides and polyols. Foods high in FODMAPs can cause symptoms of food intolerance, affecting the gastro intestinal system and this can be mistaken for a true IgE food allergy.

Loquats are moderate in salicylates. Salicylates have the potential to cause worsening of asthma, swelling, itching and hives as well as food intolerance symptoms in people who are sensitive to salicylates.

You can read more about Food Intolerances on the dedicated Food Intolerance Page.

Associated Syndromes

You may have Pollen Food Allergy Syndrome if you are allergic to 3 or more of the foods which contain Bet v 1 proteins below but are able to eat cooked fruit without any severe allergic reactions.

Loquat has been linked to Latex Food Syndrome. Latex Food Syndrome can be caused by chitinases, hevein proteins or profilin proteins. In loquat allergy the offending protein has not yet been identified due to lack of study as an uncommon fruit.

Cross Reactivity

Other foods in the Rosaceae family include almonds, apples, apricots, blackberry, cherry, hawthorn, peach, pear, plum, quince, raspberry, hawthorns and strawberries.

Foods containing Bet v 1 proteins include almond, apricot, carrot, celery, chestnut, dill, fig, kiwi, mango, melon, peach, pear, plum, raspberry, soya and tomato.

Note these food lists are not exhaustive, you can find the most up to date information on the Cross Reactivity Tool.
